Norwich City have confirmed the signing of 25-year-old Swedish full-back Martin Olsson from Blackburn Rovers.

Olsson will join up with the Canaries as soon as the paperwork for his transfer has gone through, with the Sweden international agreeing to a four-year contract at Carrow Road.

This move has come as somewhat as a surprise to many, with Olsson having attracted bigger clubs last summer. Arsenal and Tottenham were believed to be heavily interested in the Swede following Blackburn's relegation in the 2011-12 campaign; however, a move never materialised.

A season in the Championship with Blackburn appeared to have lessened the interest from the two north London giants and Norwich City have stolen ahead and moved for the talented defender.

Olsson, throughout his spell with Blackburn Rovers, particularly during Rovers' spell in the Premier League, became renowned for his ability to really move forward down the left-hand side and support attacking moves from his full-back position.

Olsson's pace allowed him to play this role with relative ease and he was so often a thorn in the side for opposition right-wingers.

Chris Hughton has been very shrewd with the signing of Olsson, with the Canaries relying heavily last year on the services of the experienced Javier Garrido, who signed a two-year deal with Norwich in May.

The addition of Olsson will add a degree of depth to Norwich's left-hand side. Olsson is a different type of player to Garrido, with the Sweden international relying heavily on pace to perform his duties both defensively and when supporting in attack, whereas Garrido, who also likes to get forward to support attacks, relies more on his natural defensive ability.

Olsson is also accomplished in playing on the left-hand side of midfield and will be a valuable cover option should Anthony Pilkington be unavailable for selection for whatever reason.

Hughton told Norwich's official website: "We’re delighted with the addition of Martin. He’s been playing in England for seven years and is well acclimatised to the Premier League.

"At this time it’s about improving the squad that we have and Martin certainly does that.”

Olsson is set to link up with Norwich City for their pre-season programme by the end of the week and does so with no longstanding injury problems, having made 20 appearances for Blackburn Rovers in the league last season.
