With total silence over Bacary Sagna's contract it seems like he may be departing the club this summer.
Over the past season Sagna has not played to the high standard expected of him and has made some errors at vital times. He made errors that led to goals against both Liverpool and Manchester United, which were amplified by the magnitude of the games.
He has not had the best season but, similar to Thomas Vermaelen, has lost the quality everybody knows he possesses. Sagna should however, extend his contract at Arsenal so he can gain back the quality he had shown in seasons prior to last and put the small mistakes and blips behind him.
If Sagna's dip in quality due to a lack of competition, then a challenge for the right back position could be rivaled by Carl Jenkinson.
Still only 21 years of age, Jenkinson looks set to become a great defender for both club and country. Being an Arsenal supporter himself, he demonstrates his passion and desire every time he plays and is never afraid to get involved in the play.
However, without regular playing time, Jenkinson will not be learning much or getting any experience playing matches therefore not being able to achieve his maximum potential.
If Jenkinson continues to spend long spells on the sidelines, then a loan spell may be more beneficial to him. The loan spell could only be six months long but the experience Jenkinson will gain from playing week in-week-out will be invaluable and allow him to develop as a player.
Another method, which could be used to solidify the right back position is for Arsene Wenger to delve into the transfer market and purchase a new right back.
There are lots of potential targets on the market, which would strengthen the defence and help to provide an established player in that position.
If Jenkinson gets to start more games and Bacary Sagna signs a new contract, then a new right back may not be needed.
If Jenkinson challenges Sagna for a place and Sagna provides experience and knowledge for Jenkinson to follow then Arsenal will have two strong candidates for the right back position
