NFL owner to make surprise Premier League purchase

Owner of NFL franchise Jacksonville Jaguars, Shahid Khan, is reportedly in talks with Mohamed Al-Fayed to purchase Premier League club Fulham.

According to the Daily Mail, Al-Fayed is on the verge of selling the club he first bought 16 years ago, investing an estimated £200million over that time.

Khan, who was born in Pakistan, became the first foreign owner in the NFL when he purchased the Jaguars in 2011 and has already demonstrated his liking for London.

Jacksonville have signed up to be one of the teams in the NFL International Series, which takes place at Wembley Stadium, for the next four years.

The 62-year-old made his estimated £1.7billion fortune in the automobile parts manufacturing business and the report claims he will spend upwards of £150million for the Cottagers.

Khan reportedly sees Fulham and London as ‘the missing piece’ in his vision to make the Jaguars a global brand and one of the most successful franchises in the NFL.

The Mail report also claims that Fulham club executives and officials new little of the sale, as Al-Fayed had been conducting negotiations secretly from his office in Park Lane.

Khan will not be the first American sports franchise owner to purchase a Premier League side, as it is starting to become something of a trend.

Most high profile was the Glazer family, owners of Tampa Bay Buccaneers, purchasing Manchester United, though the Stan Kroenke of the St Louis Rams and Randy Lerner of the Cleveland Browns have also invested.
