PSV Eindhoven have confirmed Roma have made the first move for Dutch international Kevin Strootman but have reiterated their desire to keep the midfielder, according to the Daily Star.

The Eredivisie giants are desperate to keep hold of their talismanic central midfielder after losing Erik Pieters and Dries Mertens already this summer.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for Strootman, and were believed to be scouting him at the recent European under-21 Championships in Israel.

He was reportedly earmarked as one of new boss David Moyes's first big summer signings after replacing Sir Alex Ferguson.

But Roma look to have stolen a march in the race for the 23-year-old, although PSV insist he's not for sale anyway.

PSV technical director Marcel Brands said: "Roma have contacted us to tell us that they are interested in Kevin Strootman.

"We have told Roma that Strootman is not for sale and only an important offer could convince us otherwise.

"In our opinion, Roma is the only club to be interested in Strootman, but they have made no offer."

Speculation regarding Manchester United for Strootman has cooled in recent weeks, with their attention now reportedly focussed on recruiting Barcelona starlet Thiago Alcantara.

Central midfield is thought to be a transfer priority for the Premier League champions.
