Manchester United look set to miss out on midfield target Thiago Alcantara after the Barcelona player opted to join Bayern Munich reports the Daily Mail.

Thiago has been subject to intense speculation with a move to Old Trafford looking most likely. However, he looks set to reject David Moyes & join European Champions Bayern Munich where he will reunite with former manager Pep Guardiola.

The Spanish U-21 captain was said to have favoured a move to Old Trafford because of the strong competition he would face for places in Bayern's midfield but Guardiola reassured him he would be first choice and that Javi Martinez will be moved to central defence if he joined.

Reports in Spain are suggesting a deal could be announced for the midfielder as early as this week but Manchester United are still confident of securing a £17m deal.

Despite reassurances from Guardiola that Thiago will play, there is still the matter of competing with Tony Kroos and Mario Gotze for a first team spot at the Allianz arena.

Thiago’s desire to move from Barcelona has stemmed from the fact that he wants more game time to secure his World Cup place for Spain next summer.

With the retiring Paul Scholes and the uncertainty over Darren Fletcher's future, Manchester United could offer greater assurance of a starting berth.
