Manuel Pellegrini and the backroom staff at Manchester City Football Club have admitted they are looking to acquire the services of a new forward.

With Carlos Tevez leaving Manchester for Juventus, and Edin Dzeko's future at the Citizens looking unsettled, Pellegrini needs a goalscoring machine to form a formidable forward line with the likes of Sergio Aguero.

So, who are Pellegrini's options to buy in the current summer transfer window?

The first target for the Sky Blues is Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan hitman notched up an impressive 38 goals in 43 appearances for Napoli in the 2012/13 season.

But with other mega-rich clubs such as Chelsea, PSG and Real Madrid lurking around Cavani, Manuel Pellegrini and the Manchester City board will have to dig deep into their pockets to sign this prolific goalscorer. His current buy-out clause is stated at £53 million and his transfer would be unlikely with a bid under it.

The second option for the Citizens is in the shape of Oscar Cardozo. He has scored 33 goals in 46 appearances in Benfica's latest campaign.

He would be the perfect striker in Manuel Pellegrini's new era, as he possesses a powerful and accurate left foot, as well as outstanding set-piece qualities.

However, City may be concerned about spending a hefty sum on a thirty-year-old, as he would have little resale value in a few years time. He is currently worth about £15million, and is unsettled in Benfica, after a feud with Manager Jorge Jesus, after Benfica's disappointing defeat in the final of the Portuguese Cup Final.

After a wonderful Confederations Cup campaign with Brazil, Fred has emerged on City's radar.

He notched five goals for Luiz Felipe Scolari's men, ending the tournament as joint-top scorer and claiming the silver boot.

Domestically, he scored 30 goals in 45 appearances in the latest season. Compared to other targets, Fred commands a lower transfer fee and has shown his talents and goalscoring ability for Fluminese, but in his previous experiences in Europe, he has not excelled, as he was eventually released by his former employers, Lyon, in 2009 after a string of disappointing performances.

With his experience in Spain, Manuel Pellegrini will be sure about the best bargains available in the La Liga. One of them come in the name of Alvaro Negredo. He bagged 31 goals in all competitions for Sevilla, and with a wealth of experience in the Champions League and the Spanish national team under his belt, City will be tempted to try and sign him.

He is valued at £18million and he would link up perfectly with new-citizen Jesus Navas if City were to sign the highest scoring Spanish player in the La Liga last season.

The last player that potentially could join City is Pablo Osvaldo. Osvaldo has enjoyed a fruitful season with AS Roma - scoring a stunning 16 goals in 29 outings in Serie A.

According to The Express, Manuel Pellegrini is trying to hold talks with AS Roma officials over a £15million deal for Pablo Osvaldo. He would certainly be a good signing for City, as he has the qualities of a pacey, creative and a goalscoring striker in him.

As Manuel Pellegrini and Manchester City try to cover up the gaping hole left with the departures of Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli, these prolific goal-scorers are certain to bag goals in the upcoming season, if they were to join Pellegrini's era at the Etihad Stadium.
