Gervinho must improve to stay at Arsenal

Since joining Arsenal in the summer of 2011, Gervinho has been extremely disappointing.

Arsenal fans had high expectations of the Ivory Coast winger when he first arrived at the Emirates.

However these high expectations of him were not met and he became increasingly frustrating to watch. When taking on players on the wing, Gervinho would often dribble past one of them (which was good) but then try taking on another which would prove to be one too many and he would consequently get tackled.

Gervinho’s shot is also very poor. High or Wide, Gervinho made errors with his shots far too often and certainly not to the standard of an Arsenal player.

One performance of his, against Manchester City in September 2012, was particularly memorable as he had chance after chance and poor touches, inaccurate shots and a lack of clinical finishing nearly cost the Gunners the game.

Similarly against Bradford City Gervinho failed to show any attacking intelligence or ability which resulted in him missing an open goal. His shooting is one aspect of his game he really needs to improve on if he desires to stay at Arsenal.

During the beginning of the 2012/13 season Gervinho gave Arsenal fans a demonstration of his talent which saw him get on the score sheet more often and prove himself to be a little bit more effective upfront. However, this would turn out to be a false hope to Arsenal fans. After returning from the African Cup of nations Gervinho returned to his usual self being incapable of playing well against big teams and not scoring many of his chances.

There is no doubt that he has talent but the problem at Arsenal is that he makes it hard for him to show it. With a selection of tricks, blistering pace and precise dribbling, he has the ability to beat players which he often shows but it is his poor decision making afterwards which lets him down. He always takes too long on the ball or takes on one player too many where he would have had a much better option of passing the ball to a teammate. The Ivorian also showed that he can score which he does for his native Ivory Coast regularly and at the beginning of the 2012/13 season.

So what is next for Gervinho?

At this moment in time it seems that it would be better to loan him rather than permanently sell him. Many Arsenal fans will rightfully disagree with this view due to the frustration he creates but the bottom line is Gervinho has talent but he needs to find it!

He should go on loan next season because this potential talent which he holds somewhere could make him a better player or increase his value to sell him in the season afterwards.

Gervinho is currently a player not capable of playing to the standards required at Arsenal and unless he improves, then he will have no further future at the Emirates.
