Jose Mourinho’s £11million summer swoop for Serie A star Daniele De Rossi has inched closer to completion, after his current club Roma agreed a fee for his replacement.
Roma were reportedly unwilling to part with De Rossi unless they could bring in a suitable alternative, but they are close to completing the signing of PSV Eindhoven’s highly-rated midfielder Kevin Strootman.
Chelsea boss Mourinho has long been an admirer of De Rossi’s talent and previously tried to sign the Italian star during his spells in charge of both Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
According to the Daily Mirror, Mourinho may well finally get his man now that an agreement between Roma and PSV is in place.
Providing Strootman’s transfer to Roma avoids any unforeseen last minute hiccups, De Rossi will be free to join the Blues as Mourinho prepares for his second stint in charge.
The 29-year-old’s switch would see him sign on a four-year deal worth around £110,000 a week.
Roma have expressed however that they will only allow De Rossi to leave if Chelsea agree to loan them Brazillian full-back Wallace as part of the deal.
Wallace, who only recently signed for the London club from Fluminense, has barely had time to meet his new teammates, but could be plying his trade in Serie A in the near future if negotiations are successful.
Chelsea begin their pre-season campaign on Thursday in Bangkok after three days of training at their Cobham headquarters.
