After years of saving the pennies, Arsenal finally have the potential to match the big boys of European football in the transfer market.
But after years of stagnation, do they have the pulling power to lure the calibre of player to challenge them on the pitch?
To date, Wenger’s only signing is Yaya Sanogo from Ligue 2 side Auxerre despite having a reported £70 million available to spend and a host of big names including Luis Saurez and Gonzalo Higuain have been linked to the club.
Arsenal have reportedly had a £30 million bid for Saurez rejected and the deal appears to be a non starter due to the Uruguayan’s apparent desire to leave England.
Higuain appears to be the most likely signing, but his proposed £23 million deal has been thrown into doubt this week by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez after he claimed Arsenal had not made an offer for the Argentine forward.
Wenger still has time to make the most of the transfer period but only time will tell whether a club that has not won a trophy in eight years can still attract Europe’s leading talents.
Until Wenger makes a marquee signing, Arsenal fans will be left fearing that they will be left with the same feeling of dissatisfaction they have had in recent seasons come the end of the window.
