Liverpool midfielder Stewart Downing has vowed to fight for his place in the team, after reports that he may be leaving for West Ham United.

The England international has seen competition for his place increase so far this summer, as the Anfield club have signed both Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto, while Raheem Sterling will also be vying for a starting spot on the wing.

Manager Brendan Rodgers told the 28-year-old he was free to join another club last November but that was followed by a turnaround in form, in which he managed his first Premier League goal for the club against Fulham last December.

The £20m signing from Aston Villa in 2011 told the club’s official website: “We're fighting on many fronts - cup competitions and the league - so you have to be strong in every department. But competition brings the best out of players, and hopefully it will in me.

"My targets will be similar to when I got back into the team - enjoy it, work hard and play some good football like we did at the end of last season. If we play like that again as a team, we've got a real chance of success. I've just got to keep going."

West Ham are the frontrunners for his signature, and their manager Sam Allardyce is a fan.

“A player of that calibre and West Ham being involved would be great,” he said recently to talkSPORT.
