UEFA released their shortlist for the Best Player in Europe Award from the 2012/13 season and all the expected superstars are there.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robin van Persie, Gareth Bale, Zlatan Ibrahimovic – all of these names have acquired, and deserve, many plaudits for a wonderful season.

Players such as these are destined to be the names best remembered in years to come, but there are players that make all things possible for their more flamboyant teammates.

Eric Cantona famously derided Didier Deschamps for being a water carrier, though even the Manchester United legend would surely realise the importance of men like Deschamps.

Sacrificing personal glory for the good of the team and fulfilling a role that allows others to flourish; keeping things simple and stable to provide a solid foundation or create space.

However, the modern football fan is increasingly conscious of statistical data and these lesser-lauded heroes are becoming a little more sung.

GMS want to celebrate them for a bit and have picked out five players from the Premier League that are crucial to the success and failure of their respective sides.
