Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has stated that he is ready to fight for his place in the side next season.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has strengthened his side considerably already this summer, with the likes of Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto and Kolo Toure already being added to the squad for next season. This means that first team places are already very competitive, but the former Aston Villa winger has stated that he is ready to fight for his Liverpool future.
But despite this, in November, Brendan Rodgers said that Downing was free to find a new club, following a strong of disappointing performances. But Downing, who has two years left on his contract, improved rapidly, cementing his place in the team towards the end of the season.
West Ham's Sam Allardyce is reportedly lining up a move for the winger, who is keen on adding Downing to his Hammers squad alongside former Liverpool stars Joe Cole and Andy Carroll. Allardyce recently spoke of his admiration for Downing, telling reporters: "A player of that calibre and West Ham being involved would be great."
But despite West Ham's interest, Dowing has insisted that he is ready to fight for his place in the side next season.
Speaking to Liverpool's official website, he said: "At every clyb you need at least two or three players in every position to keep people on their toes, but especially at a club like this. We're fighting on many fronts- cup competitions and the league- so you have to be strong in every department. Competition brings the best out of players, and hopefully it will in me.
"My targets will be similar to when I got back into the team- enjoy it, work hard and play some good football like we did at the end of last season. If we play like that again as a team, we've got a real chance of success. I've just got to keep going," he added.
