Manchester United target Cristiano Ronaldo had a meeting with AS Monaco owner Dmitry Rybolovlev and was offered an “astronomical salary” to join them.
According to French publication Le10Sport, Rybolovlev set up a meeting with the Real Madrid superstar and his agent Jorge Mendes while in Monaco to set out a an ambitious proposal where he would lead the newly promoted Ligue 1 to domination of European football.
It will be worrying news for Manchester United, who have reportedly been trying to put together a deal that would set up a sensational return to Old Trafford for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been expressing confidence that the Portugal star would sign a new deal at Santiago Bernabeu, which would see him retire in the Spanish capital.
However, the hopes of Real Madrid and Manchester United could have taken a massive blow following the reported meeting between Rybolovlev and Ronaldo.
The report in Le10Sport’s print edition claims the Russian billionaire has urged Ronaldo to see out his current contract, which expires in 2015, and join the project in the principality.
Rybolovlev was said to have offered Ronaldo an astronomical salary to line up alongside some of world football’s other stars – if they have qualified for the Champions League by that time.
Monaco have already made their ambition clear by signing Radamel Falcao from Atletico Madrid, as well as James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho from Porto.
