Borussia Dortmund: Sales of key players to prove costly

Borussia Dortmund have not been able to draw a coherent transfer policy.

The German club seems repeatedly overwhelmed by incoming offers - completing transfers that are only productive to the club in monetary terms.

The sales of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski are further proof of this lack of nous in the transfer market.

As a player who came through the youth-system at the club and one who was important for the starting eleven, selling Gotze was a mistake from the start.

Dortmund's mistake was made even greater when they agreed a fee to sell their young star to Bayern Munich.

Lewandowski is almost guaranteed as another player moving out of Westphalia and into Bavaria as a free-agent next year

Dortmund have gone a long way to climb back to the top of the Bundesliga, with two consecutive league titles in 2010/11 and 2011/12. These negotiations between rivals, though, are not being conducted in the cleverest fashion and are diminishing BVB as they strengthen Bayern.

Both sales are crucial errors for Dortmund that, in the near future, will come to haunt them.
