Southampton hotshot Luke Shaw has committed his long-term future to the club, signing a five-year deal with the south coast side.

Southampton confirmed that as of today, Shaw's 18th birthday, the player had signed a long-term contract that will see him stay at the club until the summer of 2018. The deal was agreed back in January 2013, when Shaw signalled his intent to remain with the Saints.

Shaw, who made 25 Premier League appearances in his debut season at the age of just 17, has also been capped for England at U16 and U17 level. Shaw has been called up for England U21 duty on three occasions, but was forced to withdraw through injury.

Speaking after signing his new deal, the teenager told the club's official website: "I've been here since I was eight and I've loved every single moment of it. I want to stay at this Club, and signing this contract means I'm here for another five

Shaw, 18, highlighted the ambition of the club and the support provided throughout his stay with the club as pivotal in him committing himself to the deal.

He said: "You can see what the chairman is trying to bring into Southampton. He's trying to build a young team for the future that will be very good. The manager has done a lot for me – especially for my fitness – and this year is going to be a big year for me."

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino also confirmed his happiness that speculation on Shaw's future could finally be ended: "We hope that Luke's new contract will bring to an end to any remaining speculation about his future, and that he can now focus fully on what promises to be an exciting season.

"It is very clear that he has a huge future ahead of him, and we are delighted that he shares our vision for his growth over the next few years," Pochettino told www.saintsfc.co.uk.

Shaw follows in the footsteps of Morgan Schneiderlin in signing a five-year deal, as well as joining the likes of fellow academy products in James Ward-Prowse, Jordan Turnbull, Calum Chambers, Lloyd Isgrove and club captain Adam Lallana in signing professional deals with the club.
