Barcelona: Four possible centre-back signings

Published 2 Comments

FC Barcelona have been one of the few clubs that have been consistently successful.

No denying the fact that they possess one of the very best attacking line-ups. The likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Cesc Fabregas have taken the midfielder area of the team from strength to strength over the years.

Lionel Messi, Pedro and recent acquisition Neymar provide ample width in attack and never come up short of goals. But the real concern has been the defence of the team. Experts have been highly critical regarding this and have criticised the lack of big-money signings in defence, especially at centre-back.

Apart from Daniel Alves and Gerard Pique there is a major difficulty that needs to be dealt with very soon. Although academy players Marc Bartra and Martin Montoya have shown glimpses of talent, they need time.

We look at the possible options FC Barcelona could try to sign this summer.

David Luiz | Chelsea

Luiz have been a revelation since joining Chelsea in January 2011, and can be called a world-class centre-back both for club and country.

Reports suggest Barcelona have already tabled a bid of €35m to Chelsea for Luiz, according to the Daily Mail, which eventually got rejected. It won’t be easy to persuade Chelsea to sell their prized possession.

Thiago Silva | PSG

The Paris Saint-Germain and Brazilian captain can be a major driving force for any team he plays for. He can be instrumental for Barcelona week-in, week-out. But he won’t come cheap.

Silva has also reportedly admitted to Barcelona’s Adriano that it would be a dream to play for a prestigious club like Barcelona, according to Fox Sports. A true leader and a team player, he would surely be the answer to their defensive problems.

Nemanja Vidic | Manchester United

The Serbian international have been a consistent performer for Manchester United and his stellar performances earned him the captain’s armband for the Old Trafford outfit as well as for his country. But he has been suffering with injuries lately for which he missed a major part of last season. A fee around £25m would be enough to land him at Camp Nou.

Mats Hummels | Borussia Dortmund

The Borussia Dortmund defender may be young but his defensive attributes would easily put him in the best XI squad for any current team. A star for the future, he still has time to develop further and what better place than the Catalan outfit.

Barcelona will be handed a major boost if they are able to make this signing a reality.

It remains to be seen if Barcelona feels the need to sign a defender and move promptly to complete the signing well before the transfer window closes.
