The years of the big four have gone and recently Liverpool have been struggling to challenge for Champions League football.

Just eight years ago, Liverpool won the Champions League with an incredible victory over AC Milan. But times at Anfield have changed and now it's a big task for the club to even reach the tournament.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has strengthened the squad a lot since this time last season. He has bought in Iago Aspas, Simon Mignolet, Luis Alberto and the experienced Kolo Toure this summer, showing real intent. Rodgers has already shown he can spot talent with Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge both having great success for Liverpool since he signed them in January.

Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto both impressed as Liverpool beat Preston 4-0 in a pre-season friendly yesterday - these two look like an exciting pair for next season.

Coutinho and Toure have both announced they are targeting a top four finish - but is this really a reasonable target?

For many years now Liverpool have been not much better than an average mid-table side.

However, with more players still excepted to arrive at Anfield, Rodgers's side will expect improvement.

However, challenging for a Champions League place will not be easy, and the difference between Champions League and Europa League could come down to whether Luis Suarez stays. He has announced he would like to leave but the Reds are believed to have turned down a £30 million offer from Arsenal. Does this mean they will not let him leave? If so prepare to see a new look Liverpool in the top four again.
