Everton are interested in signing Ajax's Toby Alderweireld, according to talkSPORT.

The Belgian defender has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs in this summer's transfer window so far, with Norwich and Liverpool also keen on his signature.

Roberto Martinez will feel confident of signing the 24-year-old, as he has already declined to join Norwich, after they had a bid for him accepted last week.

The Amsterdam club are keen to sell him this summer, with one only one year currently remaining on his contract, and Bayer Leverkusen came very close to signing him earlier this summer.

That move eventually collapsed after personal terms had been agreed with the player, who also holds 19 caps for his country.

He can play at centre-back and right-back, and his versatility is another attraction for the Toffees' new manager, who is expected to make an approach in the next few  weeks.

Having already signed four players this summer, they are yet to acquire a new defender that could provide competition for the likes of Sylvain Distin, Phil Jagielka, Johnny Heitinga, Seamus Coleman and Tony Hibbert.
