Newcastle United are set to enter talks with Porto defender Rolando, while Everton remain interested, the Daily Express have reported.
Joe Kinnear, the Magpies new director of football, is expected to hold discussions with the Portuguese international, and they have been quoted £5m for his services.
The St. James' Park club are yet to make any signings this summer, but with the club intending to keep captain Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor, the 27-year-old would provide healthy competition for places should they agree a deal.
Kinnear has been handed the task of handling transfers and making recommendations to manager Alan Pardew, and if they were able to sign a player who has won three Portuguese league titles and the Europa League, it could help improve his bad reputation with Toon fans.
Everton manager Roberto Martinez has been quoted the same price for the player, but their interest is at an earlier stage.
Rolando, who was born in the Cape Verde islands, was linked with a Premier League move back in January, when he rejected the chance to move to Queen's Park Rangers.
He instead opted to join Napoli on loan, where he made nine appearances after not making a single appearance for the Portuguese champions last season, and his club remain keen on selling him this summer.
