Mathieu Valbuena's agent has claimed that Barcelona are interested in signing the attacking midfielder from Marseille.
The French international, who has four years remaining in his current contract, started in all but one of his team's Ligue 1 matches last season, and the Spanish champions have held preliminary talks with his management team.
Christophe Hutteau, the 28-year-old's agent, confirmed the Catalan club's intention to buy his player, but a bid has not yet been made.
He said to La Provence: "I can only confirm I had talks with Barca sport director Andoni Zubizarreta about Mathieu some time ago.
"As his whole technical staff considers Mathieu to be a very good player, they all appreciate him."
Valbuena has been capped 23 times by his country, and signed for Marseille from Ligue 2 team Libourne in 2006.
Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova has already added Neymar to his attacking options this season, and is keen to add competition for places for the likes of Pedro and Alexis Sanchez.
