Newly acquired Brooklyn Nets power forward and former NBA MVP Kevin Garnett has opted to wear the number 2 in honour of former St. John's star and Minnesota Timberwolves teammate Malik Sealy.

The Nets acquired the veteran, who can also play centre in part of the blockbuster deal which brought Paul Pierce, Jason Terry and D.J. White from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks, Kris Joseph, Keith Bogans and three first round draft picks (2014, 2016 and 2018), as well as the right to swap first round picks in 2017.

For those that don’t remember, Sealy was killed on May 20th, 2000, in St. Louis Park, Minnesota while driving home from then best friend and teammate Garnett’s Birthday party. Malik’s SUV was hit by a pickup truck, which was being driven on the wrong side of the highway.

The 43-year-old truck driver, Souksangouane Phengsene, had been drinking according to blood tests and managed to survive the accident with head and chest injuries. Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt. Phengsene served a three-year prison term after pleading guilty to vehicular manslaughter.

This is not the first time Malik has been honoured. The Minnesota Timberwolves retired his #2 Jersey. Garnett has previously paid tribute to his fallen teammate as Adidas Garnett 3 shoes had “2MALIK” written inside of the tongue. Garnett also has Sealy’s name on his right arm.

Garnett, the 13 time All-Star, has previously wore jersey number 21 with the Timberwolves and number 5 with the Boston Celtics as number 21 bad been previously retired by the Celtics in tribute to Bill Sharman.

This is a great show of respect to an old friend in what appears to be his last stop in in his Hall of Fame worthy career.
