Kell Brook’s long-awaited return to the ring following injury has finally taken place, with the Sheffield star meeting former foe Carson Jones in an intriguing rematch.
The fight began with ‘Special K’ dominant early on landing right hands at will on Jones. It seemed as though he couldn’t miss. Every time he threw a shot it hit the American. Brook looked as though he really wanted to put on a show and for the first few rounds really did.
Brook knocked Jones down early on in the fight and it looked as though Jones was there to be finished. The American looked shaky and didn’t really look to throw back at his opponent. He was taking some real punishment from Brook but managed to come through.
Jones began to come back into the fight slightly and appeared to frustrate Brook as he failed to get him out of there for a while. Jones wasn’t really landing much on Brook or causing him any concern but was proving to be a pest.
After a few frustrating rounds Brook reasserted his dominance landing some big combinations and the ref stepped in to save Jones from further punishment in the 8th round of a scheduled 10. Jones’s face had been bloodied and there was no chance of him going on to win. For me it was a good decision to step-in and prevent further damage.
Brook can now move on and forget about Carson Jones. Brook didn’t appear too happy at his display but I think he has reason to be happier than he was. He showed glimpses of world-class talent that can take him far. Yes he had moments where he let Jones get out of trouble but this was his first outing since all his injury troubles and all the mental issues that go with that.
Brook is back in love with the sport and his promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that Brook will be facing a big name in September in Brook’s home-city of Sheffield. It will be nice to see Brook back at the pinnacle of the sport against a big name and to see him back on track to winning a world title.
Kell has all the talent in the world and if he dedicates himself he can achieve some great things. It will be interesting to find out who Brook will be facing. There are some huge names in the welterweight division including the likes of Mayweather, Ortiz, Bradley, Marquez, Guerrero, Pacquiao, Alexander and fellow Brit Amir Khan all possible opponents in the future.
It’s great to see Brook back and I can’t wait to see his next fight against a big name to be announced soon. Very exciting times ahead so keep watching!
