Manchester United boss David Moyes recently failed to sign Thiago Alcantara, with the Spaniard instead choosing to reunite with former manager Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich.
This would have reminded United fans of the Lucas Moura saga, where United were touted to sign the Brazilian for the entire summer - only for PSG to swoop in and get him.
This means that there is still a vacancy in United’s midfield.
Here we take a look at the players Moyes might look towards to fill that gap.
Cesc Fabregas | Barcelona
The Barcelona midfielder hasn’t had enough playing opportunities since his move from Arsenal. With Xavi and Iniesta continuing to hold fort, his chances of breaking into the first team look bleak.
Fabregas, who was used to playing in every game possible when he was the captain of Arsenal, would love the chance of some regular first team football.
United can provide him just that, and he would seamlessly fit into the United midfield as well, being reunited with former Arsenal teammate Robin van Persie.
Marouane Fellaini | Everton
The Belgian midfielder formerly played under David Moyes at Everton, and was their best player last season.
Not only did he lead counter-attacks and play some brilliant balls to the strikers, he also provided the extra bit of cover to the defence when his team lost possession. With his £23 million release clause set to expire in four weeks, Moyes will have to act quickly if he wants to be reunited with his former star midfielder.
Luka Modric | Real Madrid
Just like Fabregas at Arsenal, Modric enjoyed the form of his life at Tottenham. But he has been unsettled at Real Madrid, being voted their worst signing of the season by their fans.
He had limited opportunities to play, and with the signing of Isco the time he spends on the bench is only likely to increase.
Moyes’ predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson was also said to be interested in the Croatian midfielder, and the time could now be ripe to sign him.
