England women kept their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the European Championships alive after a dramatic late equaliser against Russia.

They must now defeat  France in their final group game to qualify.

The game against Russia was labelled as a 'must-win' and was a disappointing result. However, after spending 60 minutes trailing in the game a draw just about kept their quarter-final chances alive.

Thursday's match against France, the group leaders, will be very hard. The French side have shown class so far and are one of the favourites to win the tournament.

The maths is anything but simple. In England's group, Group C, the third place team will only go through if they better the amount of points/goal difference achieved by the third placed team in Group B or Group A.

This means that if England draw they must hope Netherlands vs Iceland and Denmark vs Finland both end in a draw and hope that they are both low scoring draws.

England will therefore make it through on goals scored.

So England really must win against France. If they will certainly make it through. But are they up to the challenge?

It has a disappointing tournament for Hope Powell's team so far, but England have some quality players and were excellent in an unbeaten qualifying campaign.

So, yes, they are up to the challenge, but it will be tough, France won every game in qualifying, scoring 32 goals and they have had a very good tournament so far.

It is likely to be a tense game in Linkoping on Thursday and England will have to show all their quality, if they are to continue in the European Championships.
