Daniele de Rossi key to Chelsea's 2013/14 title charge

Daniele De Rossi has been heavily linked to Chelsea this summer. It has been reported that Jose Mourinho has been a long-term admirer and see's a realistic opportunity to bring the midfielder to the Premier League.

Chelsea struggled last defensively due to their very attack-minded system. This is because the midfielders situated in the 'double-pivot' were naturally encouraged to push forward, leaving the center-backs heavily exposed.

De Rossi would greatly aid Chelsea in that he has a unique ability to sit in between the central defenders allowing his midfield partner to join the attack without the risk of being caught on the counter-attack.

For example - If Mourinho was to place De Rossi in the double-pivot alongside an offensively able midfielder such as Ramires, Lampard or Oscar, it would allow them to push forward with De Rossi acting as cover.

De Rossi would greatly improve Chelsea in all areas of the pitch in that his presence in the midfield would allow the creative players to perform their party tricks without the worry of leaving their defenders exposed. He would also act as the first-line of defence, stopping opposing attacks in their path before they reach the Chelsea defence.

Mourinho will certainly be hoping that he can get this deal wrapped up ahead of Chelsea's title-challenging campaign in the upcoming Premier League season.
