Throughout the summer, Arsenal fans have been informed that their team have a massive £70 million to be spent in the transfer market.

Whilst there has been a lot of speculation linking the Gunners with many high profile stars, as of yet nothing has materialised, and many of their targets have slipped through the net.

Here we look at four singings that fans were expecting to see but seem to have slipped through the net.

David Villa

The Spanish international had grown increasingly unhappy with the lack of game time he was getting at Barcelona, and a transfer to Arsenal was in the pipeline. Arsene Wenger admitted he is an admirer of Villa, and there were even reports that there had been direct contact between the two. However, the deal went cold and despite interest from north London rivals Tottenham, Villa signed for Atletico Madrid.

Simon Mignolet

Arsene Wenger is in the market for a keeper with Premier League experience, to replace inconsistent stopper Wojciech Szczesny and Simon Mignolet had been mentioned.

Reports suggested that Arsenal had spoke to Sunderland about a possible £9 million deal for the Belgian goalkeeper, but he chose life on Merseyside and signed a long-term contract with Liverpool.

Stevan Jovetic

Serbian international striker Stevan Jovetic has been linked with a lot of top clubs across Europe, including Arsenal. Wenger was interested in the Fiorentina forward as he looks to boost his attacking options ahead of the forthcoming Premier League campaign, but remained unwilling to meet the £30m asking price.

It appears now that the deal has gone cold, as Wenger has now set his sights on Liverpool striker Luis Suarez whilst Manchester City are now in pole position to land Jovetic.

Gonzalo Higuain

Gunners fans have been delighted to be linked with one of the biggest names in world football, with Arsene Wenger finally willing to pay big money to land the best players and take Arsenal back to competing for silverware.

Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain looked like he was on his way to North London in a deal worth around £23 million, but his decision rested on the appointment of a new coach at Real Madrid.

Now the biggest transfer saga of the summer looks to be dead in the water, after it emerged that Higuain is to have ‘clear the air’ talks with Carlo Ancelotti.

Despite all the speculation surrounding the Gunners, as of yet the only new arrival is Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre, on a free transfer. It is this sort of signing that has become associated with Arsene Wenger in recent years and is one of the main reasons Arsenal are so far away when it comes to competing for silverware.

Marquee signings are what fans want and they are required if the glory days are indeed to return.
