England's number six Johnny Bairstow enjoyed his Ashes series debut as he helped to claim a thrilling opening Test victory over Australia, and suggested that it will only give the squad more confidence ahead of the next encounter at Lord's on July 18.
Bairstow, who kept his place for the Ashes after Joe Root went up the order, relished the opportunity to face Australia for the first time in the Test arena and hailed England's collective effort after they secured a dramatic 14 run victory.
"It was a fantastic experience and to come out on top was brilliant, and to get the win was down to a lot of hard work from a lot of the guys. Now we go to Lord's with a lot of confidence," Bairstow told GiveMeSport
The 23-year-old Yorkshireman admits his previous Test experiences were nothing like his maiden Ashes appearances, with the intensity and atmosphere during the meeting with Australia unlike anything else he has witnessed during his career.
"There was nerves around but that's natural and it was just holding it together, luckily we came out on top," he added.
"It was unbelievable really, you can't put your finger on it but there is a different kind of atmosphere and buzz around the place, so brilliant to be playing in and hopefully I will keep on doing so."
Bairstow has been retained in the 13-man squad to face Australia in the second Test at the home of cricket, and hopes England can take a significant step towards winning the precious Ashes urn for a third time in succession.
He said: "I've played three times at Lords, I'm looking forward to it immensely and hopefully we come out with the same result. It is a fantastic place to play."
