New York Mets star pitcher Matt Harvey will start for the National League squad at the 2013 MLB All-Star Game this month.

The Mets ace ranks third in the league in strikeouts with 147 so far this season.

The American League starting pitcher for the All-Star showcase, Detroit Tigers superstar Max Scherzer, ranks second with 152 strikeouts.

The Tigers ace only lost his first game of the campaign last weekend against the Texas Rangers, ending a 13-match unbeaten run.

AL manager Jim Leyland explained his selection: "13-1 [Scherzer's record]. I don't think I need to explain more than that."

But Harvey will enjoy the advantage of home field - the All-Star game takes place at Citi Field where the Mets play.

The 24-year-old, who has a 7-2 record with a 2.35 ERA this season, becomes the first pitcher to start a Midsummer Classic at his home ground since Roger Clemens did so for the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park nine years ago.

"It's a huge honour," Harvey said. "I appreciate it. It's obviously here in New York. The fans have been great all year. Hopefully I can make them proud."

Other notable starters include Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers and David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox - both for the American League.

And Yadier Molina of the St Louis Cardinals and Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals - both for the National League.

The starting lineups for the game are as follows:
