The All-Star break celebrations started in New York on Monday evening as the 2013 Home Run Derby took place at Citi field.

Citi field was treated to an exceptional display of hitting as some of the best hitters in baseball took to the field to put on a show for the fans.

Early money was on Prince Fielder of the Detroit Tigers to take his third home run derby victory. Fielder however, fell far short of the standards expected of him and failed to make it out of the first round.

Home team favourite for the New York Mets, David Wright also failed to make it out of round one, along with Pedro Alvarez (Pirates) and Robinson Cano (Yankees).

Round two proved as exciting as the first round. Oakland slugger Yoenis Cespedes followed up hit 17-homer performance in round one with six in round two. Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals hit eight home runs to book his place with Cespedes in the final, leaving Michael Cuddyer (Rockies) and Chris Davis (Orioles) to be eliminated.

The final was a tight affair. Both Cespedes and Harper were tied with eight home runs each. Cespedes then came up to the plate and crushed his ninth home run to take the derby with a walk-off win.

The festivities will continue on Tuesday evening, as the All-Star game will take place at Citi field.
