Liverpool approach for Shaqiri denied

Liverpool have not made an approach for Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri and the Champions League winners have no desire to sell him, according to the club's chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Shaqiri has been linked with a transfer to Liverpool having failed to break into the Bayern first-team during his first season at the Allianz Arena, although Rummenigge claims Pep Guardiola wants to retain the services of the Swiss.

"Liverpool have not made an offer for Shaqiri and we want to keep him," said Rummenigge, as reported by Metro.

"We neither want to loan him out nor sell him. Pep Guardiola rates him very highly."

Shaqiri, who had been linked with a transfer to Liverpool prior to his to Bayern, made only 13 starts for the Bundesliga champions after joining the club from Basel last summer.

It was claimed on Monday that Liverpool are ready to test Bayern's resolve to keep the 21-year-old after the Reds missed out on Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Borussia Dortmund last week.

Shaqiri's position with Bayern appears to be under further threat following the acquisition of Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona, but the Bavarian giants maintain the Switzerland international will stay with the club.
