Gareth Bale has picked up from where he left off last season - scoring outrageous goals for Tottenham.
Spurs' first pre-season game on Tuesday night was a dour 1-1 draw against Swindon. But for Bale's one moment of brilliance there wasn't much to write home about.
Andre Villas-Boas gave a number of fringe players the chance to impress - including Jonathan Obika and Andros Townsend - while Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen and Jermain Defoe all got their first run-outs of the new campaign.
But it was Bale's wonder-goal that caught the eye. Celebrating his 24th birthday, he underlined just how crucial he could be for Tottenham's hopes of crashing the top four next season.
The Wales winger ended the last campaign on a startling run of form, banging home 14 goals in his final 16 matches.
And he continued that hot-streak, taking just 15 minutes to score his first of pre-season. Latching on to a Gylfi Sigurdsson pass, the Spurs star lashed a rocket volley past Swindon keeper Wes Foderingham from 18 yards.
But Swindon snatched a share of the spoils with 15 minutes left, Mark Francis finding the net past second half substitute Brad Friedel via a deflection off Steven Caulker.
