Reading started their pre-season tour of Portugal with a hard-fought draw with Portuguese first division side OS Belenenses Lisbon.

The away side started the brighter with a few good opportunities, but it was OS Belenenses who took the lead on the half-hour mark. Alex McCarthy brought down Belenenses forward Fredy in the box after he had stolen the ball from the keeper. The penalty was then well converted by the striker.

It was a comedy mistake which may have stopped Premier League club's interest in the goalkeeper who put in some fantastic performances towards the end of last season.

Reading still dominated and Adkins will be disappointed with some missed opportunities, wingers Jordan Obita and Garath McCleary were playing well but their crosses were not converted. The Royals went into the break 1-0 down.

The second half was more even with both sides getting some half chances, but it was level on the hour mark despite a great effort from Jordan Obita, who impressed for the whole game.

On 60 minutes Reading changed their team around making eight changes. It almost led to an equaliser with Jobi McAnuff’s cross finding Jake Taylor who couldn’t head home.

A minute later McAnuff cut in and nearly beat the keeper with a decent shot. Reading had a strong grip on the game but failed to capitalise. That was, until the ball fell to Adam Le Fondre on the edge of the box, who sweetly sent the ball into the bottom corner just seconds after Alex Pearce had had a header cleared of the line.

The contest was level with three minutes to go and Reading pushed for a winner but they could not find it and the game ended one a piece.

Adkins can take some positives from a tough encounter. His side dominated for much of the game and had incorporated his passing style into their play.

Some youngsters, including Jordan Obita and Jake Taylor, also showed some promise, maybe some stars of the future.

Reading will play SC Olhanense on Friday and will hope to pick up a win then.
