Sunderland have confirmed that they have signed Italy international Emanuele Giaccherini from Juventus for £6.5m.

The midfielder, who made 40 appearances for Juve last season as they completed a domestic league and cup double, has signed a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light.

Juventus were initially reluctant to sell the versatile Giaccherini, who can play on either wing, central midfield, or in behind the striker, but conceded that they could not guarantee him first-team football on a regular basis.

With the World Cup fast approaching, he will be desperate to get as much game time as possible in order to maximise his chances of travelling to Brazil with Italy.

However, he impressed at the recent Confederations Cup, scoring in a 4-2 defeat by hosts Brazil.

Giaccherini is the eighth signing of the summer for Paolo Di Canio's side, joining fellow Italian Vito Mannone and American international Jozy Altidore - among others - at the Stadium of Light next season.
