Juan Mata has been linked with a move away from Chelsea, most notably to Barcelona and part of a swap deal that would bring Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney to Stamford Bridge.
However, allowing the Spaniard to leave Chelsea, especially to one of their greatest rivals, would be one of the worst pieces of transfer business Jose Mourinho has ever performed - no matter what he gets in return.
Mata was one of the stars of last season and certainly Chelsea's best player. He hit double-figures in both goals and assists in the Premier League, and finished the season with 20 goals and 35 assists in all competitions. Incredible stats.
The former Valencia man was pivotal in the Blues' Champions League winning campaign back in 2012 and put in a Man of the Match performance in the FA Cup final the same year. Mata has expressed that he is happy at the club and has no intention to leave, and the Chelsea board should most definitely have no intention of selling him.
He has publicly spoken about his desire to win the Premier League at Chelsea and this upcoming season may well be his best shot at it.
If Mourinho wants to win titles, he needs players like Mata.
