Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones has rejected speculation that the Championship side are considering an approach for Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi.
Jones has made it no secret that he wants to bolster his forward line before they travel to Queens Park Rangers on the first day of the new season.
And with Newcastle manager Alan Pardew in the market for a striker it was believed that Ameobi would be offloaded by the club after slipping well down the pecking order at St James' Park last season.
Ameobi is reportedly earning around £22,000 a week at Newcastle, with a year to run on his contract at Tyneside, but Jones has told the Sheffield Star that the Nigerian is not someone he is in the market for.
"I don't know where people keep getting these names from," Jones told The Star.
"People keep linking us with players who are at clubs with far bigger wage bills than ourselves.
"One minute it is Kenwyne Jones and the next it is Shola Ameobi. It is absolutely ridiculous."
In other news, a Martin Taylor goal was not enough to stop Wednesday heading to a 3-1 defeat in a pre-season friendly against Braga last night.
Next week the Hillsborough outfit will entertain Glasgow Rangers as all focus goes on preparing for the new season ahead.
