The BBC has secured a shared deal with BT Sport for the broadcasting rights of the FA Cup.
BBC director general Tony Hall said of the deal: "Bringing the FA Cup back to the BBC was something I really wanted to do.
"I am so pleased that we have achieved it for football fans everywhere."
Announced at Wembley this Wednesday, it is understood that BBC One will show live matches while BT Sport will be responsible for internet streaming.
Although it is not yet clear how many matches the BBC will broadcast, it is expected that Match of the Day will act as a hub of the coverage with the competition becoming integral to the BBC One schedule.
The BBC already comprehensively cover the sport through the Football League Show, the UEFA Women's European Championships and its rights to the 2014 Brazil World Cup, but the FA Cup has been conspicuous through it's absence in recent years.
Hall added: "There is something very special about big national moments on the BBC and the FA Cup should absolutely be one of them.
"The Olympics, Wimbledon and Glastonbury have shown how our audiences love it when we put the full weight of all our services on TV, radio and digital behind covering these events in depth and in ways no-one else can."
Radio coverage will remain the remit of BBC Radio 5 live until 2018 and the same channel will undertake live commentary of 128 Premier League games next season.
The newly-appointed FA chairman, Greg Dyke said: "I would like to thank everyone who expressed an interest in these FA Cup broadcast rights and congratulate the BBC and BT Sport on their successful tenders.
