Tiger Woods favourite for Open victory
Tiger Woods is favourite to claim his 15th major title in the British Open at Muirfield
As preparations for the 142nd British Open at Muirfield on Thursday draw to a close, world number one Tiger Woods has been outlined as favourite to win the tournament and claim his 15th major career title.
Woods has not won a major title for five years, but will perhaps fancy his chances this week in what is expected to be extremely dry conditions. The last time he faced similar conditions, at the Royal Liverpool in 2006, the American was dominant.
His ability to consistently find the exact spots he wants on the fairway off of his two-iron 'stinger' will be benefited hugely by the calm and dry weather.
In 2002, his hopes at Muirfield were ruined by a third-round 81 in driving wind and rain, that is not expected this time around. Although, he does find himself up against a host of players that are capable of thwarting his game-plan.
The defending champion Ernie Els is expected to put up a fight at the course where he lifted the Claret Jug 11 years ago. While Justin Rose is also considered in the running to become the first English winner since Nick Faldo's 1992 triumph.
