Despite Manchester United being the most recognisable sporting brand in the world, some of their transfer targets have slipped away this summer.

Despite being crowned as the best team in the country, this is of concern to United fans as this lack of high-profile transfer action prevents United making headway in Europe.

Here are six targets that United have either missed out on - or are still yet to sign.

1. Thiago Alcantara

Thiago was planned to have been brought to Old Trafford to replace the retiring Paul Scholes. Thiago wanted to leave Barcelona due to lack of first-team action, with Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Cesc Fabregas all blocking his path to regular first-team football.

Instead of coming to United as the playmaker of the English champions, Thiago opted to rejoin his mentor Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich, in spite of him being down the pecking order behind Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez and Toni Kroos.

United should have pressed home the crucial role Thiago would have played at United.

2. Cesc Fabregas

Despite launching a £25m bid, it's clear Cesc Fabregas has no intention of joining United. As the English champions, it's rather embarrassing for United to be rejected time and again by Europe's elite.

3. Marouane Fellaini

At a time when Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are splashing the cash on the best young talent around in Isco, Neymar and Thiago Alcantara, United are being linked with Marouane Fellaini.

Whilst Fellaini is a very good player, and can dominate a midfield against most Premier League teams, it's doubtful he's the player United need to replace Paul Scholes, and to take United to really competing for the Champions League.

4. Leighton Baines

At a time when United's defence is looking solid, with a combination of experience and youth, and with Patrice Evra continuing to perform well, for United to buy a left-back when other areas of the team are in more urgent need of strengthening would be a bad move, and would take a hefty chunk out of David Moyes' transfer budget

5. Ezequiel Garay

Whilst Garay is a great player, United already have Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling competing for two centre-back positions, so to sign Garay would result in one or more of these defenders leaving, which wouldn't be beneficial to United, taking into account the age and performances of these defenders last season.

6. Robert Lewandowski

When United are supposed to be pushing for the Champions League with big-name signings, they had and have an opportunity to sign the standout striker of last season's Champions League.

So far, we have only seen a half-hearted attempt to sign him for United. In spite of already having three world-class strikers in Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez, Ferguson always believed his great teams must have four great strikers.

It's commonly agreed that Danny Welbeck is not up to the same calibre, so it would be responsible of United to move Welbeck on, and sign Robert Lewandowski.

Who should United sign this summer?
