Manchester United’s midfield problem needs no introduction. Sir Alex went out on a high, but left the most unfortunate task of rebuilding United’s midfield to the incumbent David Moyes.

Michael Carrick has been sublime for United, but looking at his age, you begin to wonder how long can we depend on him to stabilise the midfield.

After losing out on Thiago Alcantara to Bayern Munich, the Red Devils are surely busy looking for a young midfielder who can help Moyes build his own dynasty at the Theatre of Dreams.

Here we discuss in detail about some potential signings in this department:

1. Claudio Marchisio

A Marchisio transfer could work for United in more ways than one. He definitely has the defensive presence required so dearly in the current midfield, but is also creative enough to aid in an offensive role.

He can be used to nullify opposing threats without risking a creative force going forward. He could work like an improved Phil Jones in the United midfield. He has also played behind Mirko Vucinic as the second striker.

If a midfielder is versatile enough to play well in both defensive and offensive positions, why not shell out enough to land him?

2. Marouane Fellaini

Everton will obviously be in a very difficult position should David Moyes come back with a fishing-net for Fellaini. Fellaini is easily one of the best players on the Everton roster - perhaps only behind Leighton Baines - who interestingly, has had a bid from United for his services turned down by Everton.

Marouane Fellaini, on paper, is exactly the type of player that can help United’s defence which at times has been more porous than a sponge. But some United fans are concerned that he may not be of United quality.

Everton will almost certainly do everything in their power to scupper any transfer, so the most likely scenario is of United triggering his release clause which is reported to be around £24 million.

But Moyes will need to act fast if he wants to settle this transfer, as recent reports claim that the release clause in his contract expires after August 15.

3. Nemanja Matic

In Nemanja Matic, Manchester United would get a complete defensive midfielder. He also had brief experience in English football with Chelsea, who eventually used him in a deal to bring David Luiz to the club.

Chelsea are looking to re-sign the Serbian, but if United can negotiate with Benfica and the player, he could be the answer to the midfield woe.

His release clause is in the range of £42 million, which is obviously a staggering sum, but Benfica could let him go for much less.
