Southampton started pre-season with a steady 2-1 victory over Spanish side UE Llagostera, at the home of Palafrugell CF.

Llagostera are a third tier Spanish side, based in the independent province of Catalunya.

A goal in each half from Jay Rodriguez sealed the win, which looked in doubt then Llagostera equalised early in the second half courtesy of a header from David Cano just after the hour.

Rodriguez got himself on the score-sheet on nine occasions last season, and will be looking to push on in his second season with the south coast club.

The first goal was a gift for Rodriguez, after goalkeeper Moragon misjudged a back-pass and allowed Rodriguez to slot home. The second presented itself on the rebound as the Burnley-born striker gladly obliged.

Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino made ten substitutes at the break, giving new signings Dejan Lovren and Victor Wanyama the chance to acquaint themselves on the field with their new team-mates. Wanyama went close twice, once with a curling shot from range, and again with a 25 yard pile-driver.

Jos Hooiveld and Emmanuel Mayuka missed out through injury, whilst Maya Yoshida was left out having only arrived earlier this week after an extended break due to his representation of Japan in the Confederations Cup.

Uruguayan Gaston Ramirez is expected to return next week, having also represented his nation at the competition.
