The real disappointment for the Spurs fans regarding the possible transfer of David Villa might have come from all the hype and rumours.

After signing Clint Dempsey, 30, who somewhat failed to deliver in his first season with just 12 goals in 43 appearances, and Defoe already being 31-years-old, Spurs would surely think twice before adding another forward who is 30-odd-years-old.

Villa's choice to move to Atletico would be a subject of debate considering he will get to play Champions League football, but the fact that he does not have Premier League experience would have surely crossed some minds.

Also in a press conference the 31-year-old stated that there was an option to move to the Premier League, but there is no mention of the club which was interested in him.

Spurs finished fifth last season with their highest Premier League points tally ever, which was quite an achievement in itself as a host of players like Moussa Dembele, Hugo Lloris, Lewis Holtby, Clint Dempsey, Jan Vertonghen and Gylfi Sigurdsson were playing their first season together with team chemistry still developing.

The White Hart Lane outfit lost momentum last season when Sandro got injured, he is now fit and the area has also been bolstered by the signing of 24-year-old Brazilian Paulinho who is a box-to-box goal-scoring midfielder.

Gareth Bale scores for fun and if it wasn't for mistakes at the back they would have surely have won more games last season, especially as the left-back position was exposed the most with a misfit in Benoit Assou-Ekotto. So that should be the area where they look to strengthen.

As Spurs fans eagerly wait a top class forward to be included in the team before the start of the new season, there is no news from either Andre Villas-Boas or chairman Daniel Levy claiming a need for a striker so far. However, there have been rumours linking Aston Villa's Christian Benteke to White Hart Lane and The Daily Mail reported last week that the north London club would be making a bid this week, although the Birmingham based outfit are yet to receive a official bid.

There are many players who are being linked to the top five Premier League clubs already this season, who eventually move in different directions. This surely raises concerns over an alarming number of false rumours just to increase the cash value of the player in question.
