Manchester United's recent interest in Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas makes him the most likely solution to fill their midfield troubles.

David Moyes is desperately hunting for a playmaker to control the pitch next season.

After missing out on Thiago Alcantara to the German giants Bayern Munich, Moyes is clearly eager to sign the former Gunner captain.

United have been lacking in the midfield area for some time now. Despite Michael Carrick proving to be a consistent performer in the middle, his age is certainly a cause for concern.

However age has proven to be no boundary at Old Trafford, Paul Scholes showed his class up until the last minute after coming out of retirement to fill the midfield void for Alex Ferguson.

Ryan Giggs is still featuring in the starting line-up even at the age of 39.

He has recently accepted a coaching role at the club but is still set to make appearances on the pitch next season.

Nevertheless this will inevitably mean that his playing career will end next season with the coaching role awaiting him.

With these two midfielders leaving the squad, a top drawer midfield signing must surely be United's first priority.

Fabregas, at the age of 26, has not quite 'lived the dream' at Barcelona.

After being desperate to pursue his career at the club upon leaving Arsenal in 2011 -  he has struggled to get the desired time on the pitch, whilst morale appears to be lacking.

At times it seems he was happier at Arsenal in the Premier League, and we could well see him return to British football in this transfer window.

Whilst Arsenal have a first option to sign him thanks to a clause in his contract, Manchester United could be the best fit for the Spanish international.

There is no doubt he would be would be a major first team player for the league champions.

United do have contention in the ranks with Tom Cleverley looking to become a regular name on the teamsheet, as well as Anderson looking to make his presence known.

However these names simply do not match up to what can be seen at other major clubs in the league: Oscar, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in the Chelsea dressing room, David Silva and Yaya Toure for local rivals City, and even Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla at Arsenal.

It is clear that a signing must be made to fill United's midfield troubles, and to provide a partner for Michael Carrick.

Fabregas may just be the perfect solution.
