Since joining Liverpool from Villarreal in 2005, Pepe Reina has been a mainstay in the goalmouth for the Reds.
However, this summer's arrival of Belgian stopper Simon Mignolet hinted that Reina's days at Liverpool may be numbered.
The former Sunderland keeper arrived at Anfield for a fee of £9m, and immediately declared his intention to make himself first choice.
Speaking to the Telegraph, Mignolet said: “I'm not here to be sitting and resting. I'm here to come and progress, and play. It's a challenge that can make you better and stronger and I will just try and do my best. I will work hard and if I get a chance, I will show that I should be there.”
Reina was at times dropped last season in favour of Brad Jones, after a slow start to the 2012/13 campaign. He did however finish the season in style, with six clean sheets in the final nine games.
Now Rafa Benitez, Reina's former Reds boss, hopes to capitalise to seal a swoop for the Spanish international.
Napoli this week saw a move for Queens Park Rangers' Julio Cesar fall through at the eleventh hour. The Serie A contenders have now switched their attention towards the 30-year-old as they seek to strengthen their defence.
The Azzuri hope the lure of Champions League football may prove pivotal in persuading Reina to swap Liverpool for Naples.
Napoli's re-emergence as a force in Italian football was confirmed this week, when owner Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed that the club had a €124.5m budget this summer, as they look to win their first Scudetto since 1990.
