Wayne Rooney is not your everyday striker. He is one of those players that is born once in a generation - probably, even, once in a lifetime.

Talents aside, he is one of those players who have become a symbol in football.

He is the front-man of Manchester United, and every time you see England in international action, you look for Wayne Rooney.

Rooney’s talent is doubtless, he is up there with the best strikers in world football, but as a player he is so much more than that. So if United were to lose him, they would lose more than just a talented player.

Rooney joined Manchester United from Everton, a promising teenager. A lot of people then would have predicted that Rooney would be big future star.

But what he has achieved with United is much more than anyone at that time could have imagined. When Cristiano Ronaldo was taking the entire spotlight, Rooney was quietly brilliant, silently working in the hindsight without complaining.

It seems incredulous that media has portrayed him as a man jealous of Robin van Persie, even though playing in the shadow of Ronaldo did not cause Rooney any problem at that time.

Rooney asked for a transfer in 2010, but ended up staying at the Theatre of Dreams.

Rooney became Mr Manchester United in the upcoming seasons, and everyone forgave him. However, there is now uncertainty surrounding his Old Trafford future once again.

Some fans believe that he can be replaced and he can be replaced, in terms of goals perhaps, but what he is for Manchester United today, that cannot be replaced.

Having Wayne Rooney in the team has ensured all these years that United do not have any problem up-front. There have been defensive problems, the midfield is in a worrisome state, and the transition from Edwin van der Sar to David de Gea has certainly not been easy. But in the midst of everything else, Manchester United offence has unfalteringly been the best in the league, because Wayne Rooney has been providing goals and creating chances for a number of years.

Even when he has been in poor form, his presence alone sometimes does the job, because defenders try to swarm him while leaving the second striker free to do his job. Having Rooney in the line-up means that United become that much more scary.

Talent-wise, Wayne Rooney may not be difficult to replace, but presence wise, Manchester United might need a lot of time to find someone else who inspires others like Wayne Rooney.
