Marseille and Toulon represented their respective sports in a battle to once and for all decide that age old question, which sport is superior? Football or rugby?

The match between the best side in French rugby and one of French football's leading teams took each other on in this clash of the titans, playing one half of football, followed by one half of rugby.

The referees for the clash may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you read about the crazy hybrid match, but when Eric Cantona is there, it has to be made mention of.

The second half was also refereed by a star name in France, with national rugby coach Marc Lievrement taking charge of proceedings.

Marseille started well, playing their sport of choice in the first half, and taking a quick 2-0 lead.

The only surprise was that the scorer of both goals was Steve Mandanda, the French international goalkeeper, who decided he was better suited to a midfield role in this game.

However, the first half did not go all Marseille's way, with Toulon hitting back with a shock three goals in a row to take a 3-2 lead.

It didn't last for long though as the footballers hit back to take a 5-4 advantage into the break.

You would expect the second half to be all about Toulon and it started that way, with the rugby outift showing their class with two tries, but were pegged back by scores from striker Andre-Pierre Gignac and midfielder Alaixys Romao.

Delon Armitage gave the hosts the lead again, but Marseille managed to level the second half late on with none other than their physio, Christophe Maouvrier, touching down to give the footballers an unbelievable 36-35 victory.

This one had screamers, tricks, flicks, tries and even turned out to be a close contest.

You can watch the highlights above.
