Arsenal are reportedly targeting Marouane Fellaini to bolster their midfield.
It is however, likely that he might like to link up with his former manager David Moyes at Old Trafford. Arsenal had also reportedly made an offer of £18.5m for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder, Lars Bender.
Both these reports suggest Arsene Wenger has identified a need for a defensive midfielder for his team but has yet been unable to address that gap in his team.
Last season, after the sale of Alex Sing to Barcelona, Mikel Arteta stepped in to fill that gap and did a commendable job with Aaron Ramsey at the back end of the season when the Gunners impressed with their defensive solidity and discipline.
But Arteta limped off midway through the first half of the last game of the season away at Newcastle United. It was expected that Francis Coquelin would be the substitution but Wenger brought in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to play through the middle.
Wenger obviously sees the young Englishman's future through the middle. The Frenchman, in the mean time has since been shipped off on a season long loan to Freiburg.
The one player who is still at the club, who could be an option for the position is Emmanuel Frimpong. The 21-year-old has the physical attributes to be the midfield enforcer, but has made only six Premier League appearances for the club.
After coming through Arsenal's academy alongside Jack Wilshere the career paths of both have taken contrasting paths. While their budding careers have been cut short by long-term injuries, both are now fit, and raring to go.
Frimpong has had loan spells interrupted by injuries but his style of play indicates he might feature in Wenger's long-term plans. Frimpong is known for his energy in the midfield and strength in the challenge. He has also been called a younger version of Michael Essien because of his hard work in the defensive midfielder role.
Regardless of his potential and long-term promise, it is unlikely he may feature much this season considering Arsenal's hopes to win the title, and may again be shipped out on loan or may at best play a role from the subs bench as a cover for Arteta and Ramsey.
