Europe's most prolific marksmen: 2012/13 (1)

Published 5 Comments

Alvaro Negredo might not be the sort of marquee striker signing that Manchester City fans have craved, especially having been linked with the likes of Radamel Falcao, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez this summer.

But, make no mistake about it, Manuel Pellegrini has acquired a proven goalscorer, and a player that will be worth his weight in gold in the club's attempt to wrestle the Premier League title from local rivals Manchester United next season.

Negredo has scored 102 goals in 209 appearances in La Liga, during spells with Almeria and Sevilla, and has established himself on the international scene with reigning world and European champions Spain, which itself is no easy feat.

The 27-year-old has great physique and power, is good in the air, and will be well-suited to the English game. He also boasts a strong technical ability, and will be a nightmare for any Premier League defender on his day.

Inconsistency is the most repeated criticism of Negredo's all-round play, with the striker prone to missing as many chances as he scores. But, the fact that he scored 25 league goals last season - and was the highest scoring Spaniard in La Liga - shows that he is more than capable in the final third.

In fact, there were only six strikers across all of Europe's top five leagues - in Spain, England, Italy, France and Germany - that netted more league goals than Negredo in 2012/13, which should relay any fears from Manchester City fans that they've been stitched up having paid £20million for his signature.

Click through the tabs - above or below - to see the six strikers more prolific than Negredo last season, then you can sit back and feel good about the latest acquisition to arrive at the Etihad Stadium.
