Arsenal rival Chelsea for Brazil star

Published 5 Comments

Arsenal are considering rivalling Chelsea in the race to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo.

According to Metro, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is concentrating most of his efforts on bringing in a big name striker, but has his eye on a player to act as a shield in front of the defence.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was reportedly ready to move for the Brazil international, as Stamford Bridge midfielder John Obi Mikel looks set for the exit door.

Gustavo has seen opportunities in the Bayern starting XI limited due to the combination of Javi Martinez and Bastian Schweinsteiger in the Bavarians’ midfield.

Defensive midfield is an area that Arsenal are reportedly looking to improve, as Mikel Arteta was forced to fill in there last season and it is a position he had never really played regularly.

The Spaniard was crucial to the Gunners’ play last season, but Gustavo would provide an upgrade in terms of mobility and physicality, while maintaining technical quality.

The 25-year-old was part of the sensational treble-winning Bayern side last season and the report claims Arsenal could offer in the region of £8million for him.
