Tiger Woods ready to pounce at Open Championship

Published 1 Comments

Tiger Woods is just one shot off the lead at the 142nd Open Championship after an incredible second day at Muirfield.

The world number one may have only hit a level par 71, but it was better than most on an incredibly tough day in sunny Scotland as the leading pack moved back towards the 14-time Major winner later in the afrernoon.

Miguel Angel Jimenez is the outright leader - another to hit level par on the day - on three under, with four players just one shot behind on -2. Woods, Henrik Stenson, Dustin Johnson and Lee Westwood sit in that group, with the Englishman producing the round of the day (68).

Overnight leader Zach Johnson is next on the list at one under, with Angel Cabrera the other big name in that pack of four.

In one of the most open championships in years, 23 players are within five shots of the lead, with Adam Watson, Bubba Watson, Phil Mickleson and Charl Schwarzel all close enough to make a run at the top spot in the coming days. The South African also hit a 68 on Friday.

As the day went on, the cut line moved further and further back, and plenty who thought they would be heading home will now play two more rounds. Incredibly, the mark of +8 is enough to get to the weekend.

Not everyone survived at that score though, with Luke Donald, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy some of the big names still missing out.
