Ryan Bertrand focused on Chelsea amid Liverpool transfer interest

Chelsea have told Liverpool to forget about signing Ryan Bertrand this summer, after informing the Merseyside club that the defender is not for sale, according to The Observer.

The 23-year-old full-back is the subject of reported transfer interest from Anfield, but remains very much in Jose Mourinho's first-team plans in west London.

Ashley Cole is currently Chelsea's undisputed first-choice left-back, and after signing a new one-year contract to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge, looks like being so again in 2013/14.

However, Mourinho is said to have held talks with Bertrand, to reassure the England youngster - who played in 38 of Chelsea's 69 games last season - that he will play an important role in the campaign ahead.

"I want to be Chelsea's No.1 left-back, and when that time comes it will happen," said Bertrand. "All I can do is be ready and keep playing, keep biding my time.

"I'm thinking of nothing else. I am just focusing on being No.1, concentrating on progression in the games I get, and I've managed to do so in recent years."

Liverpool have Jose Enrique in their ranks, but also played Glen Johnson out-of-position on the left-side of defence on a number of occasions last season, and Brendan Rodgers wants to add another natural left full-back to his ranks this summer.

Rodgers knows Bertrand well from his time as a youth coach at Chelsea, but it now looks as though he'll need to turn his attention to alternative targets.
